10 reasons South Africans say this beats an axe for kindling prep in 2026

Splits wood for kindling without an axe or hatchet. Mounts to wall or post.

I have been looking for one of these for years, this is the best wood splitter you can get. Very solid.

The Kindling Splitter vs the axe

The question
Kindling Splitter★ ONE PULL
The axe
Kindling in one go?
Yes. One pull, one strip
No. Swing, miss, swing again
Any skill needed?
No. Load the log, pull the lever
Yes. Aim, angle, years of practice
Any strength needed?
No. The lever multiplies your pull
Yes. Every swing is all you
Easy on your back and shoulders?
Yes. Stands at hip height on the wall
No. Hunched over a block, swinging
Kindling for the whole weekend?
Yes. Chunka chunka chunka
No. One stick at a time
Lives where you braai?
Yes. Bolted to the wall, folds flat
No. Leaning in a corner of the shed
Backed if something goes wrong?
Yes. Lifetime warranty, 30-day money-back
No. No local backup

1. One pull. Kindling.

Slot the wood in. Pull the lever. Done. Clean kindling in seconds. Chunka chunka chunka, kindling for days, and the fire is lit before the axe is out of the shed.

Chopping fire wood made extremely easy!!
Johan V. · Verified Customer ★★★★★

2. Hold the log. Pull the lever.

One hand steadies the log, the other pulls the lever. The lever design multiplies force, so splitting takes strength out of the equation. One smooth pull does the work and your shoulder does nothing.

This has made splitting kindling and small pieces of wood easier on the back compared to an axe and hatchet.
Aaron · Verified Customer ★★★★★

3. Your axe takes 20 swings. This takes one pull.

No aiming, no swinging, no sweat. The blade stays put and the wood comes to it, so every pull lands exactly where the last one did.

I was skeptical initially, but after mounting I found it works much better than expected.
Andries B. · Verified Customer ★★★★☆

4. The blade parts the grain.

A carbon steel edge bites, the crack runs the length of the log, and it opens along the grain. Removable, so a few strokes on a stone brings it back.

The bar is long enough to get decent leverage for splitting and thick enough for strength.
Dirk D. · Verified Customer ★★★★★

5. One log. A pile of kindling.

Work the log down the blade and you have a weekend's starter wood from a single piece.

Kindling for days.
Timothy L. · Verified Customer ★★★★★

6. Even starter wood, every time.

Same width every pull, so the fire catches first time. Braai, fireplace, boma, pizza oven.

We have an Ooni Pizza Oven and the woodsplitter is absolutely perfect for us as we need small pieces of wood kindling.
Metta B. · Verified Customer ★★★★★

7. The toothed rack holds the log for you.

Seat the wood on the stepped rack and pull. As the blade bites, reseat it a notch higher so the lever stays at its strongest angle.

Great on softer woods (Oak, fruitwoods, Bluegum). Once you get the cutting angles right you are quickly away.
Garry H. · Verified Customer ★★★★★

8. Solid steel. Built to live outside.

Steel bracket, steel lever, carbon steel blade, four bolts. Wall-mounted for rock solid stability, and heavier than you expect when the courier hands it over. Built to last years, not seasons.

I was surprised when this arrived by how much it weighed. It is much heavier than I expected and is very well made.
Robert D. · Verified Customer ★★★★☆

9. Folds flat when you're done.

Swing the arm out, split, fold it back against the wall. Nothing leaning in a corner of the garage.

Awesome product, feel solid, local is lekker.
Christo P. · Verified Customer ★★★★★

10. On the wall in 15 minutes.

Four bolts and sleeves in the box. Brick, concrete or a solid post next to the braai. Mount it around hip height and you are splitting the same afternoon.

Even for me the mounting was super easy and didn't take me longer than 15 minutes.
Johan V. · Verified Customer ★★★★★

11. The braai gift he'll actually use.

The tool he reaches for every braai, not something that gathers dust. Birthdays, Christmas, a housewarming with a new braai. A quarter of our reviews are wives and mates buying it for someone else.

I bought this for my husband for his birthday and he was just too stoked for words!! Best birthday gift ever
Candice H. · Verified Customer ★★★★★
It has been so useful that we have purchased one for our sons and another one for a friend as a gift.
Metta B. · Verified Customer ★★★★★

12. Test drive it for 30 days.

Mount it, split a weekend's kindling. If you are not happy, send it back and we refund every cent.

I have been looking for one of these for years, this is the best wood splitter you can get. Very solid.

For the braaier who'd rather be at the fire than at the chopping block

Braai wood in, kindling out, fire lit. Two weeks in, the hatchet hasn't moved. Rated 4.6 out of 5 by South Africans who put the axe down.

Questions, answered

What wood does it take?+
Dry braai wood, pine, offcuts and smaller pre-cut pieces up to about 30 cm. It is a kindling splitter, built for starter wood.
How much effort does it take?+
One pull of the lever. The long arm multiplies your force, so the wood splits and your shoulder does nothing.
Where do I mount it?+
A brick wall, concrete or a solid post, ideally next to the braai. Four bolts and sleeves are in the box. Mount it around hip height so your arm pulls at its strongest angle.
How long does it take to install?+
About 15 minutes with a drill and a spanner. Mark, drill, bolt, done.
Does the blade stay sharp?+
It is carbon steel and it is removable, so when it eventually needs a touch-up a few strokes on a stone brings it back.
What does delivery cost?+
Nothing. Free delivery anywhere in South Africa. It ships from our warehouse in Durban with The Courier Guy, 2 to 5 working days to main centres, tracking by email.
Can I pay in instalments?+
Yes. 4 interest-free payments of R399.75 with Payflex at checkout.
What if I don't love it?+
30 days, full refund. Mount it, use it, decide.
What about the warranty?+
Lifetime warranty with local support in Durban.
Buying for a braai room, a lodge or a team?+
Email howzit@braaiplank.co.za with how many you need and we will sort it in one order.
